Samurais during Japans feudal period were men of the warrior class, men
who were bound to serve the land-owning lords in the protection of their lands and in the collection of taxes. The samurai originated in the 12th cenury as a
means of internal support for the local rulers or lords. The samurai had a distinct code of honor, however, that dictated how they were to perform their function.
The thesis can be presented that that code of honor was directly impacted by the religion of the period, religion that in itself was in an evolutionary states. While
politics were obviously important as will be emphasized below, the samurai also evolved right alongside Japans religious evolution. Japans political status
was of great importance in the evolution of the samurai. In the fourteenth century, for example, the Japanese Emperor Go-Daigo attempted to overthrow the shogunate, the defacto government vying
for power with the contemporary government of the emperor. In a movement that would become known as the Kenmu Restoration he sought to control both the civilian and
warrior components of the Japanese power structure, a scenario which had been in effect for generations (Shinn). Go-Daigos attempt to restore the monarchy, however, resulted in civil war and
