An 8 page paper discussing some of the stereotypes associated with the world’s most influential religions, and the dangers of relying on stereotype to predict national culture based on religion. Those cultural issues originating in religion certainly need to be addressed, but for many, simply acknowledging and accepting that religious differences exist is enough. The paper focuses on Islam because it is so useful in pointing out the dangers of stereotyping an entire nation based only on the name of the religion predominant among them. There are few differences between Islam in Saudi Arabia and Islam in Jordan, but there is a world of difference between other cultural factors that are said to be religious in nature. Frequently, those cultural factors in reality have little bearing on religion; it is important to know the differences between religious culture and social culture. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

some aspects of life that we take for granted are unthinkable in that nation. Nearly all nations aiding in the Gulf War effort sent women as part of their
contribution, women who were there to fill roles as soldiers. As they were not Saudi women, they were not subject to specific laws regarding women, but some were persecuted
nonetheless. One such woman who drew the attention of the Saudi "morals police" was a "U.S. servicewoman pulled her 9-mm sidearm on a mutawain zealot who tried to stop
her from driving a military vehicle near the Dhahran air base" (Ellis, 1990; p. 31). Just this past June, there were rumors circulating
Saudi Arabia that the unthinkable was about to happen, that Saudi law was about to be changed so that women could legally drive cars in that country. Interior Minister
Prince Naif assured the press that there were no such plans, and women would continue to be banned from driving (Anonymous, 1999). While we find such oddities laughable, these
differences in culture are neither laughable nor odd to those who live by them. Rather, they are fixtures of that part of the social culture that has grown from
the predominant religion of the land. Confusion of Culture and Religion Repression of women is
