Indeed, the indigenous women of Latin America like women in general, have been historically suppressed by Western Civilization. While, admittedly, there is an observable difference in gender roles between the male and female in the more ancient components of indigenous society, these differences were justifiable in terms of the differences in physical makeup between women and men and the requirements of their environment. While there were differences, perhaps even differences in the hierarchical order of these times, they were differences which completely understandable given the circumstances. In the historical aspects of western civilization, however, the differences which have existed between women and men in regard to their societal roles have not been justifiable for centuries.
