They could be paid pennies and lose their job without reason. Many people struggled, and often in violent conditions at first, to build unions for many workers. There are many reasons why unions are important and powerful, and this also includes, perhaps especially, those in the construction industry as they are generally a high risk in relationship to the dangerous work they are often expected/required to do. The following paper examines the importance of unions for construction workers. The Importance of Unions: Construction Workers As mentioned, there are many reasons why unions are important, and why they are needed in the construction industry, and elsewhere. There are, in fact, so many positives to unions that to truly illustrate and defines the importance of unions in this short of space is all but impossible. In the words of Mishel and Walters (2003), one of the most important elements of unions is "Unions raise wages of unionized workers by roughly 20% and raise compensation, including both wages and benefits, by about 28%." In doing so they also take wages and put them in a position where they are not discriminatory at all, nor can they be. Unions raise the wages of people who do not have college degrees, but clearly have skills, and people who are considered blue-collar workers, giving many people a chance at making a better than impoverished living (Mishel; Walters, 2003).
