FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION How the media reports any given story directly impacts the truth of that story; because of sloppy reporting, incorrect fact finding or exaggerated information, radio, television and newspaper coverage can completely distort the actual events. Because we do have freedom of expression, however, it is generally allowed for anything and all things to be printed unless they are slanderous or break another law, such as pornography. The news media is especially quick to take advantage of this right. At times using downright exploitation, the media will do whatever it takes to sell a paper, much like we see in the movie Newsies. Media coverage is something that cannot be avoided in todays technological society. It used to be that high profile news stories would be broadcast after the incident had occurred, along with every other bit of news that merited a position in the top story lineup. It was also a standard policy that a suspects name was not released until official charges were filed. Now with computer-generated cameras that can transmit images immediately back to the studio, television is now at the scene of the crime as it is happening. Newspaper reporting has reached a pinnacle, as well, with the advent of the digital camera. Now images can be sent immediately back to the editor, usually long before the story has even been written.
