Yet, COBOL is important as it runs a great many systems today and if trouble shooting is necessary, some companies will likely be in trouble if they do not seek talent in advance. COBOL has had a widespread global impact and while the language is not taught much in schools today, it is still important in todays world of computers. Common Business Oriented Language, also known as COBOL, is one of the first high-level programming languages ever devised ("The COBOL," 2002). It had been created in 1959 by a group of professionals at the Conference on Data Systems Languages (CODASYL) and since that time, has undergone a few modifications and enhancements (2002). Through its history, the problem of incompatibility between ANSI and COBOL had been discovered and so in 1968, a standard form of the language was created (2002). That had been called American National Standard (ANS) COBOL (2002). In 1974, ANSI created a revised version of (ANS) COBOL that contained several features which were excluded from the 1968 version (2002). In 1985, ANSI went on to create another revised version that contained new features, but that was not the end of it as the language as it exists today continues to evolve ("The COBOL," 2002). For example, Object-oriented COBOL happens to be a subset of COBOL 97, and that is actually the fourth edition of ANSI/ISO standard COBOL (2002). COBOL 97 has within it conventional improvements inclusive of object oriented features (2002). Object-oriented COBOL compilers are apparent as the language becomes standardized (2002).
