The premise was that companies would be in direct and constant contact with both consumers and businesses. The suppliers of information, services, and goods who were unable or unwilling to fully embrace the new way of doing things via the "magic" of information technology would find themselves abandoned by more demanding and increasingly impatient customers. Obviously, those futurists were correct in their predictions. In fact, they may have even under-estimated the impact of information technology in daily life. What has happened is that technology and related economic globalization have shifted the structures of the most fundamental of human units of organization, not the least of which is the family. It is important to understand that the full potential of information technologies and the Internet have not yet been fully tapped either as a source for the expansion and improvement of interpersonal or business communication or to the degree through which information can be distorted. One reason futurists are often wrong in their predictions is that the most profound technological change can be the quietest. Personal computers seemed to exist only in the world of hackers until one day PCs became almost as common in many households as televisions. The introduction of electronic communications into mainstream use has continually and radically changed the way people communicate for both business and pleasure. People "meet," exchange information, search for new careers, even fall in love through electronic communication.
