Therefore, the advancements made in submarine warfare during the period of 1776 to 1918 are significant and have had an important impact on the warfare capabilities of the United States. It was during the American Revolution that the United States navy was just beginning to form and to have a noticeable impact on warfare (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). But, it was the efforts of David Bushnell that were most dramatic in this regard (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). Bushnell was from Saybrook, Connecticut and was a practitioner of what was called asymmetric warfare (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). During this time, Britain had a very powerful navy and the United States simply couldnt compete (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). So, Bushnell created various watercraft weapons that could be used against the British ships in unconventional ways (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). Toward this end, Bushnell was responsible for building the worlds first submarine (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). He built it in 1776 and it was dubbed "Turtle" (Mines in the U.S. Revolution, 2004). It was egg shaped and was propelled by two hand-cranked propellers. One propeller was for horizontal movement and the other was for vertical propulsion. The Turtle had a complex series of air and ballast systems.
