information. IT has changed the way in which industry operates, the first impression may be seen as a result of the new industry that has developed, however, the impact is much wider than this. Almost every business will be influenced in some form by IT. Businesses, small and large, all rely on computer, in 1997 it was found that in the US 85% of small companies, defined as companies with between one and four employees, relied on computers (Anonymous, 2002). When we look to companies between 5 and nineteen employees more than 30% were making use of servers, and of communications networks were utilised by 45% of companies (Anonymous, 2002). The advantages are perceived as lower costs, higher productivity and an evening of the playing field between large and small companies. However, the evidence is that the industry does not provide all of these benefits. Indeed, there has been much discussion over the productivity paradox; the inability of the increased use of IT to produce higher productivity levels. Despite this figures reveal that for every $1 spent on IT the market price of the company will increase by $10 (Brynjolfsson and Hitt, 1998). However, despite this the value is still perceived as strong, and the use of computers has moved from being seen as a source of competitive advantage., to a necessity to survive.
