The Yellow Wallpaper Gilmans story was written at the end of the 19th century, at a time when women were essentially confined to being wives and mothers if they were
fortunate enough to be born into a family with enough money and resources for such a life. In short, there were really no opportunities for women, nice women, in this
time short of perhaps being a teacher or a prostitute or servant. The best a woman could hope for was to be a wife and mother and in the eyes
of men these women were both simple and angelic. It was an incredibly difficult time for many women whose intellect and passions sought more in their lives. In The
Yellow Wallpaper the reader is made aware that the woman is being controlled by her husband, who thinks she simply needs to rest. She knows he does not understand what
is happening to her, but yet she heeds his advice and rules nonetheless because she was a good and dutiful wife. But, she knows she needs more in life. She
wants to write and has to hide her writing from him. She is ultimately told that writing or any intellectual stimulation is not what she needs. She needs to rest.
It was a time when women were seen as simply having "spells" and when that happened they were doing too much. It
