While the tale has been critically acclaimed, thought of as being primarily about war and peace, good and evil and things of that nature, it appears that the component of gender has perhaps not been argued enough. While one can say that things were different then, things have not changed very much as women are still in a somewhat subservient position to this day. Yet, at the time, the burden placed on women to obey and look beautiful, was greater than it is today. Yes, things have changed a great deal since the Iliad was written. But one cannot help but compare the way women were treated in the text with how they are treated in contemporary society. Even in the context of the age in which it was written, the Iliad highlights the fact that women were treated in inferior ways. To some, inferiority is not what is most significant. It appears that Homer gave the beauty of women an importance. After all, Helen of Troy was responsible for launching one thousand ships and starting the Trojan war, a myth that the Iliad embraces. And Homer doesnt refute Helens power. Still, the author equates women with prizes. In one part, Agamemnon had been quoted as saying: "Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus outwit me. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me. Are you to keep your own prize, while I sit tamely under my loss and give up the girl at your bidding?" (Homer PG). Further, Homer talks about Chryseis and Briseis, two female prizes. It seems, and Homer confirms this, that the wars were begun due to the love and possession of a female.
