Indeed, it sounds illogical to describe death as being part of life but for the characters in ONeills play, perfectly describes their purposeless existence as they blindly go through the motions of living. By definition, the iceman mirrors the void that lives within each and every person who enters the saloon, a place where ones hopes and dreams are strung along by false promises and deceitful aspirations. It is no coincidence that all who pass time in a drunken stupor are hovering just above the gates of death. Rocky recognizes the morgue-like appearance of the saloon, although he does not realize the more intricate implications of time that this represents. He is dependent upon the thought that Hickey will soon be by to bring life to the dying atmosphere. What he does not know, however, is that Hickeys attitude is the antithesis of spirit; rather he is the instigator of death to a mans ambition, dashing it all away as nothing more than a mere "pipe dream" (ONeill PG). As expected, Hickeys attitude brings great discord among the saloon patrons, creating a scathing hostility that he secretly relishes. Cold and calculating, Hickey appears to bolster his comrades by encouraging their pipe dreams, yet in reality he is merely placating their ignorance. Solely because of the icemans interference, the saloon takes on a new and uncomfortable appeal, one that moves the ticking clock of time closer and closer toward personal destruction.
