In 1879, it was Powell who had a hand in the founding of the National Geographic Society as well as the U.S. Geological Survey (75). A project began that would last more than a century. The entire nation was topographically mapped in an endeavor that ended in 1991 and helped to create more than 50,000 maps (75). That was only the beginning. Perhaps dreamers like Powell spark ideas down the road and make it possible for men in future times to achieve things they never dreamed. Just like Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, a basic product, some of the things taken for granted are indeed the most awesome. But the Hoover Dam was a wonder in and of itself. Its sheer size attests to that fact. It was a major undertaking and further, was finished in record time. The fact that such a large undertaking only took a bit over two years is a great achievement. The Hoover Dam is one of many dams today that are responsible for creating environmental hazards, but the history of the dam, the wonderful visitors site, and all the good that the dam had done from its start should not be lost in environmentalist causes. Of course, such issues do need attention. At the same time, the Hoover Dam has done a lot of good too. No matter what the environmental arguments are, one cannot deny that the Hoover Dam succeeded in performing two vital tasks for the nation (Ward 75).
