Of course, New York was not the only region dealing with the problem but due to the fact that the city is so large, the spraying of the mosquitoes in an attempt to prevent the virus from spreading, had created controversy. People were dying of Encephalitis and it was presumed that the mosquito was at fault. Yet, the public was divided on whether or not spraying chemicals to kill all of the mosquitoes and other insects would do more harm than good. The long term effects of such an effort are unknown. There were many different perspectives on the matter. Such controversies are not new. The same types of questions surface whenever a new vaccine is created. With any treatment, there is risk. For example, when decisions about taking flu vaccine are made, people consider that the immunization may actually give them the disease. Other vaccinations, such as Pertussis are more controversial, as they are government mandated and in some cases cause death. Similarly, when the decision was made to spray the grounds with chemicals in order to kill mosquitoes, it was done with the safety of residents in mind. However, while the decision to spray was made to protect potential cases of encephalitis from cropping up, there was little regard given to the damage done to the environment, nor to the long or short term health effects of its citizens. In general, the chemicals were deemed to be relatively safe and cursory warnings were provided such as it is better to stay indoors than go outside during the spraying.
