great wealth hiding in the rivers and streams in this wilderness that was California, and many people flocked to the state in the hopes of becoming very wealthy. However, the reality was quite the opposite as many people lost their lives and lost all hopes of wealth as they struggled to make a simple living. However, despite the loss of dreams it was a reality that essentially populated California in many different regions that were previously unknown to many people in the nation. The following paper examines two different perspectives on the Gold Rush, from people who were there, as seen in the work of Sucheng Chan and Spencer Olin titled Major Problems in California History. The Gold Rush The two pieces in the work are E. Gould Buffum Exults in Golds Discovery, 1850 and Louisa Clapp Pokes Fun at Her Experience as a Gold "Mineress," 1851. The two perspectives are quite different in many respects and both clearly offer the reader honest and real perspectives of this particular time in history. Just because they are different, however, does not mean that one perspective is less, or more, valid than the other. But, in very subtle terms, it would be well argued that Buffums was more realistic due to its mention of the hardships involved. In Buffums piece the focus is on the growth in the state through economics and population. Buffum focuses on how California was once only populated by simple people for the most part, Natives and other people. But, with the Gold Rush came a great number of people who took advantage of the wondrous temperature and agricultural prospects of the state.
