venues, and can be seen within the players themselves. The NBA Finals are broadcast to more than 200 countries in over 40 languages, and fans living outside the United
States account for more than half of all the hits logged on the NBA.com website (Wertheim 72). In addition, more than 20 percent the $3 billion in merchandise sales
comes from overseas, and sources predict that in the foreseeable future, this figure will actually top 50 percent (Wertheim 72). Foreign players used to be an oddity in the NBA;
now they have become commonplace. In fact, five of the six top San Antonio Spurs players hail from outside of the United States (Wertheim 72). On an average
night, an NBA basketball game might more closely resemble a meeting of the League of Nations. There are such rising young European players as Spains Pau Gasol of the
Memphis Grizzlies, Germanys Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks, and Frances Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs (Deveney 70). Yugoslavias Marko Jaric of the San Diego Clippers found
his way to America by way of Greece, which is where he began his professional career at age 18 (Deveney 70). Mehmet Okur came from one of the unlikeliest
