One of the most significant areas influenced by Enlightenment thinkers like Spinoza was the American political system based on a participatory democratic government. Though historians often site religious freedom as a basis for the decision for creating an autonomous American government free from English rule, the authorship and theories of the Enlightenment brought to light the ideas of democracy and principles of participatory government that not only defined the process of change, but shaped how our government was structured. Prior to the Enlightenment, much of the western world was dictated by a longstanding set of traditions, which included authority placed in the hands of certain segments of the population, that left many outside of the process of decision-making (Israel, 2006). The call for the independence of the American colony in the 18th century was the result of radical enlightenment views that focused on greater equality and rejected traditional leadership (Israel, 2006). Subsequently, the 18th century was marked b a period of greater expression and principles like democracy, equality and liberty of lifestyle, all of which drove American leaders to see methods for freedom of thought and expression (Israel, 2010). Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza maintained the importance of political structures that could inherently support a self-governed people and this included efforts to reject the preeminent operations of the past and embrace a democracy with lasting implications. The modern American ideals of democracy, freedom, equality and a government of the people and by the people, are directly related to Enlightenment perspectives.
