Introduction Rearing children is an incredibly complex and difficult process. The outcome of a parents efforts is influence by a myriad of factors that are unique to the parent,
the child, the environment in which they live and the context. Children must be taught how to behave in an appropriate and acceptable way in their larger environment, the society.
This is no easy chore that the parent has taken on. Every child is different. Some children respond to a word or look from a parent. As they grow
older, some children will respond to time-out. Others will respond to reasonable discussion. Others just dont respond to milder forms of punishment. It becomes a challenge for parents who want
to nurture and encourage their children and still teach them about proper behaviors. Since at least the late 1950s, with the introduction of Dr. Spocks books on child-rearing, corporal
punishment and in particular, spanking, has been a topic of heated debates. This paper will discuss this topic and offer the comments made for and against the use of
spanking. Definition Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment is "the intentional infliction of physical pain for a perceived misbehavior. It includes spanking, slapping, pinching, choking, and hitting with objects" (Block, 2000,
p. 5). Other Countries Nine countries in Europe - Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, and Sweden - have outlawed corporal punishment in all settings,
