The opinion is often that the restrictions placed on women by Islamic law is unfair discrimination and the women are perceived as victims of a masculine society. The argument of degradation and victimisation looses a great deal of the power behind this when it is seen that many Islamic women may choose to abide by the masculine laws. There are many arguments which may put forward the idea of social programming and victims unable to see their own oppression. This is a point worthy of consideration as it explains a lack of resistance to the constraints placed on these women, even when they face even more problems when they seek to accept this limited social role where reproduction is of great importance and decision making is seen as the male domain. The problems of conservative Islam and the lifestyle followed by women with this belief are due to the cultural clash with western norms. In western society there is a move towards equality and the desire be politically correct. Political moves which support these ideals are supported and those who resist equality are vilified. In a culture where gender is a key determinant of the role in society equality is not perceived in the same context. To westerners this may be interpreted as inequality, to those following a conservative Islamic path the argument may be that equality does not mean that men and women should be the same, arguing the women are held in high esteem.
