1. Introduction This part of the paper is the introduction, it states what it is the paper is looking at and how and lays down the basis for the examination that take place. In the modern world the role of counselling and the counsellor may be seen as both created and developed into a multimillion dollar industry. However, there is a major difference between having good counselling skills and being a counsellor (Burnard, 1995, page 261). It is that difference that this paper will focus on; looking at the difference between being a technician and being a full counsellor. It may be argued that the role of counsellor has been developed in the twentieth century (Connor, 2002, page 8). However, this does not mean there has not been a long history of the use of counselling skills. History shows the importance of those who act as counsellors or have counselling skills, there have been political counsellors, business counsellors and those who have leant counselled others in anything from matters of the heart to more public matters. Many leaders have relied on the counselling skills of those close to them, in addition to this we need only took to the role of friendship within which there is often, without realising it, the use of counselling skills. There are many differences between the use of counselling skills and being a counsellor, and while a counsellor needs to use counselling skills, there is not the need to be a counsellor to use counselling skills.
