There are many tourist attractions in the country which has a long and rich cultural heritage and a broad diversity of geography and culture. In 1978 the receipts from international tourism were US $ 2.64 hundred million, but 2002 this had increased to US $203.85 hundred million. There was a drop in 2003, but this may be attributed to many other factors such as the outbreak of SARs and negative publicity, but by 2004 the income was US$ 257.38 hundred million, up 47% on the 2003 figure (CNTO, 2005). It is not only international tourism that is seeing increased revenues and visitor numbers the same is true of internal or domestic tourism as many Chinese remain within the country as few can yet afford international travel. Receipts from domestic tourism were estimated at RMB 3,442.00 hundred million increasing to 4711.00 hundred million in 2004 (CNTO, 2005). In 2004 the major provider of tourists was Asia, with 10,736,595 visitors of these Japan sent the most tourists with 3,334,255, Korea with 2,844,862. 3,775,707 tourists came from Europe the most from here coming from Russia; 1,792,193 (CNTO, 2005). 1,789,500 tourists came from America, with 1,308,627 coming from the US. From this we can see there is not only to a thriving industry, but due to the areas where the majority of the tourists originate there is also a low level of culture clash occurring, the main areas from which the tourists originate are Japan and Korea where the cultures, although different are not as alien as the east and the west.
