perhaps the beginning of time. It is, or can be, a process, a moment, where some powerful truth is observed, or experienced. In Leo Tolstoys The Death of Ivan Ilyich
a reader can well see this observation of truth by Ivan as he slowly dies from some strange condition. The following paper examines this truth, this transcendent, condition as seen
in Tolstoys novel. The Death of Ivan Ilyich The first thing that one needs to perhaps see, and comprehend, in reading Tolstoys novel relates to the fact that
the character of Ivan is relatively normal, but yet also somewhat arrogant and ignorant. He is a man who slowly realizes his life has not really meant much of anything.
If he were a man who was gregarious, loved, humble, and likeable from the very beginning it is not likely that a powerful truth would really be revealed through dying
and death. The fact that he is not necessarily a deep or astounding or likeable character in life makes the book more powerful in its presentation of truth or transcendence
in the end. With his character in mind one can first see this transformation, this sense of transcendence, as he is dying. For Ivan there is the process of
dying and then the death itself that show the reader the truths he discovers. He observes his life, what it has been, while he is still strong enough mentally to
do so. He has not yet achieved, or reached, that moment of true transcendence in death. He notes the following when he examines his life, beginning to see truth that
goes beyond the living dimension: "It occurred to him that what had appeared perfectly impossible before, namely that he had not spent his life as he should have done, might
