The following verses report some of the many times Jesus was counter-cultural in His behaviors and thoughts: * Tax collectors and sinners had joined Jesus and His disciples for dinner. "When he teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus response was: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mark 2:15-18). Jesus made it clear that His purpose was to gather the lost sheep, to heal the sick and bring hope and salvation to everyone. * It was on Sabbath that Jesus healed the man with a shriveled hand while the Pharisees watched to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. Jesus became angry and "asked them, Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" (Mark 3:1-6). * Jesus made a special point to recognize the importance of children. When His disciples tried to turn the children away, Jesus said: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it" (Mark 10:14). Tax collectors were especially disliked and shunned in the time of Jesus because they were greedy and held great power over the people (Tashjian, 2006).
