was most admired for his administrative ability and his accomplishments. Indeed, he had accomplished a great deal in the span of one lifetime. Charlemagne has gone down in history as many things, and aside from a few stray comments, most of those things have been complimentary. The significance of Charlemagnes legacy should not be underestimated. The study and classification of early leaders is important in the understanding of history as well as current events. Charlemagne was, above all, a great emperor. Yet, what are his achievements and policies? Why might one consider Charlemagne to be great? In a document written by Charlemagne, and submitted by a student, it is said: "each one ought to study what he desires to accomplish" (114). The context is that the letter was addressed to Abbot Baugulf and was about education. Charlemagne believed in education and in choice. He in fact was a believer in fostering both religion and education. He did do a lot of good for the Christian community at that time but to call him a crusader might be rather extreme. Still, it is a reputation he has. However, one can easily say that Charlemagne was a wonderful leader who considered the needs of the people in terms of both their personal and professional enrichment. It is rather interesting to note that Charlemagne had pushed education and religion as he was barely literate himself. Still, because he saw the importance in education, one can say that Charlemagne was a visionary.
