For this reason, modern psychology has often found the need to develop various tools for quantifying the psychological process, such that results and findings become more precise and arguably objective. For instance, one might consider a therapist examining a client. Through the lens of one theoretical perspective, the therapist might find the client to be suffering from a neurotic disorder and prescribe psychotherapy. From another perspective, the therapist might find the same client to be suffering from a chemical imbalance and in need of medical intervention. From yet another perspective, the therapist might find the same client suffering from a cognitive dysfunction and in need of behavioral therapy. Whatever the case, however, there is some need for diagnoses to be made in a manner that is coherent across different practices and perspectives. In such a case, metrics and scales are often utilized. Therapists from a wide range of backgrounds can then examine the objective scores on these metrics and scales and immediately gain an understanding of the client that is arguably less distorted by theoretical bias. This paper will explore one such metric in depth, examining its contents, as well as its scoring provisions: the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale, or CAARS.
