Of course, the present conflict with Iran is one that is related to nuclear weapons and an arms build-up, something not unlike the Cold War situation. An editorial in The Washington Times contains the following warning: " Mr. Leventhal points to an often-overlooked danger that Iranian possession of nuclear weapons would pose: that the regime could pass along nuclear weapons to Hezbollah or other terrorist organizations that it supportsi." Hence, the problem that is presented in relation to Iran may in fact be more than a mere threat from an isolated nation. Iran sits next to Iraq and the danger of terror is there. This conflict clearly comes under the heading of the war on terror, despite the fact that the primary issue goes to a nuclear threat. The wars, each ambiguous in their own right, do have similarities, but there are differences as well. It will be shown that containment is plausible as it respects both conflicts. In using case studies to demonstrate that knowledge is a tricky thing, it will be shown that sometimes, a fight can seem right at the time, but wrong in retrospect. While the conflict in Iran is not over, the Cold War is, and when looking back from a twenty-first century perspective, the U.S. looks a bit foolish. Obviously, communism was not the big threat it was thought to be. While one can say that containment may be applied to both conflicts, not everyone agrees. Dowd for example says that containment was a strategy that worked during cold war days, but it will not work for the current war on terrorii.
