The word holy or sanctity are used 150 times in Leviticus (Dom?nguez, 2001). The purpose of the multitude of laws contained in Leviticus was to set the people of Israel apart from all other nations, it established the Israelites as Gods chosen people. The laws found in this book cover everything in daily life and is clearly instructions for behavior as well as the punishments and consequences of disobeying the Lord. Clearly, the Lord was directing the Israelites to change the behaviors they engaged in while in slavery. Nemitoff points out that the laws found in Leviticus are a reiteration of the Ten Commandments but while the Commandments are issued as laws for each individual to follow, the laws in Leviticus are meant for the entire nation of Israel (2002). Here is the code between the community of Israel and God (Nemitoff, 2002). God tells the people that they are holy because their God is holy (Nemitoff, 2002).
