The only other gemstone that has this color range is quartz, and the range of colors has earned fluorite its nickname, "The Most Colorful Mineral in the World" (Fluorite, 2007). The most beautiful of all fluorites colors is the purple, which "easily competes with the beautiful purple of amethyst" (Fluorite, 2007). The green, yellow and blue shades of fluorite are "deeply colored, popular and attractive," but the colorless variety has not been as well received (Fluorite, 2007). There is a brown variety of the mineral found in Ohio; its unusual because it has a "distinctive iridescence that improves an otherwise poor color for fluorite" (Fluorite, 2007). Other colors, such as pink and black are also in demand (Fluorite, 2007). Most fluorite specimens are a single color, but "a significant percentage of fluorites have multiple colors and the colors are arranged in bands or zones that correspond to the shapes of fluorites crystals" (Fluorite, 2007). In other words, a fluorite is usually cubic and the "color zones" within the mineral are "often in cubic arrangement. The effect is similar to phantomed crystals that appear to have crystals within crystals," the various crystals being of different colors (Fluorite, 2007). A fluorite specimen might have a clear outer shell through which a cube of purple can be seen (Fluorite, 2007). Its possible that one fluorite crystal could have many different colored bands or zones within it, and it is this variation in color that makes the mineral so attractive in jewelry making. In addition, "fluorite is frequently fluorescent and, like its normal light colors, its fluorescent colors are extremely variable"; usually it fluoresces blue but it can also fluoresce "yellow, green, ...
