First of all, however, in order to put this investigation in perspective, the history of Las Vegas, as well as the history of the triumphal arch itself as an architectural structure, is described. The following examination of one such element focuses on the replication of the Arc de Triomphe that is part of the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. First of all, however, in order to put this investigation in perspective, the history of Las Vegas, as well as the history of the triumphal arch itself as an architectural structure, is described. Las Vegas originated in the mid-19th century as a stop on the stage route between Salt Lake City and San Diego, as this location contains a spring where weary travelers could refresh themselves while crossing the Mojave Desert (Reed 147). The name "Las Vegas" means "the meadows," and this location did, indeed, present a sharp contrast with the barren territory that surrounds it (Reed 147). The transformation of the town began in the 1950s when the Mafia arrived with a lot of capital and the realization that gambling in Nevada was perfectly legal (Las Vegas). They built numerous hotels, but tourists did not begin to arrive until the hotels started offering top-notch entertainment (Las Vegas). The evolution of the city that has led to the development of theme-type hotels is designed to broaden the appeal of Las Vegas to families, as well as adults who are not primarily attracted by the gambling. In Las Vegas, Americans fancy that they can have the experience of seeing several world-famous locations, such as Paris and the Egyptian pyramids, without the inconvenience of traveling outside the country.
