examine the sides that involve slavery and the American Revolution. On one side of the issue we have those who argue that if the Founding Fathers had included the emancipation of slaves in the founding of the nation then the American Revolution would not have been won. On the other side are those that argue that the American Revolution could have just as easily been won if the Africans were free people. The following paper examines the two sides briefly and then argues that the emancipation of slaves would not have changed the fact that Americans won the revolution. The Sides For the side that argues that the American Revolution would not have been won if slaves were free, one of the primary arguments centers around the South. The South possessed most of the slaves, or thoroughly used most of the slaves that existed in the new land. Already at this point in history there was a bit of bitterness between the North and the South regarding many things, of which slavery was one. If there were no such things as slaves the South would perhaps not have been in the position they were in and would likely have sided with the British, not caring that the new land become independent. But, with the slaves they truly had their own possessions which they desired to keep. This is perhaps one of the most powerful arguments for the need of slavery during the American Revolution. On the other side we see that many people in the North did not really own slaves, in the same way that the south did, and they, more often than not, had servants.
