The Aeneid is purported to be the most important poem in Latin literature (Levi,
1999). The accolades surrounding this epic no doubt are made in recognition of its deep symbolism and political commentary. Although it maintains a facade of patriotism, the poem
is, in fact, an underhandedly pessimistic account of Augustus regime. This is true despite the fact that Virgil was writing under the close supervision of Augustus and was obligated
to portray him and his regime in a positive light. "The Aeneid" has, of course, been analyzed throughout history as to its intended
meaning as opposed to its apparent meaning. There are many examples of his pessimism in regard to Augustus regime. In Book VI, for example, Aeneas arrives with the
Trojan exiles to Italys shoreline. He is confident and certain of the great future that lies before him. He ultimately finds his way to his moving encounter with
Sybil. With the gloomy prophecy of Sybil that the Trojans will face more bloodshed, Aeneas replies that he is ready and only needs to find his way to the
underworld so that he might see and confer with his father. Sybil replies that the path to the underworld is easy, it is the path of return that most
find more difficult. This is just one of many references to the fact that while Augustus power might be phenomenal, and his consequent mowing down of others accomplished seemingly
