of a more violent society. Others see nothing wrong with the violence on TV. To them cartoons are just that and other violence is mere entertainment, with no cause for alarm. In any typical week, violence on TV is at a staggering level. Each week is one more week, in the view of troubled parents and concerned politicians for TV to continue to assault youngsters with violent images, encouraging aggressive behavior in a culture where handguns and street violence are rampant. Parents are more than a bit concerned that violent scenes are doing untold damage to their children (Zoglin, 1996). President Clinton signed into law a telecommunications bill passed by Congress, which launched the era of the V chip. Most homes will have this little device that is being installed as required equipment in most new TV sets. This V chip will allow parents to block out offensive programs automatically (Zoglin, 1996). The release of a weighty academic study in February 1996 effectually said that it is about time to curb violence on TV. The study was financed by the cable industry and conducted by four universities. The conclusion is that violence on TV is more prevalent than most had imagined. Nearly 2,700 programs were analyzed in a 20-week survey of 23 channels (Zoglin, 1996). More than 50% were said to contain at least some violence (Zoglin, 1996). The report summarized a growing body of research and concluded that the link between TV violence and aggressive behavior is no longer in doubt (Zoglin, 1996).
