However, there exists somewhat of a disparity between genders with regard to the factor of trust, being that female respondents have demonstrated a more trusting approach than their male counterparts. Such an assertion can be based upon a number of theories why women might be more trusting of television news than men, with one of the most logical being that women are inherently more accepting of what is presented to them without feeling the need to question. greater than did less empathic persons. Respondent gender similarly produced a main effect without interacting with exemplar emotionality. Female respondents assessed all dangers and risks as higher than did
their male counterparts" (p. 787). Since its inception, the standard of journalism was long a tool of integrity and fairness. Newspersons may
have embellished here and there in order to put more flavor into a piece, but for the most part, there was a distinct significance to the storys inherent honesty.
Truth has struggled to remain a respected commodity in reporting even in the light of such undesirable concepts as yellow journalism, an industry catch phrase that tests the very fiber
of viewer trust. The phrase "yellow journalism" was coined to represent the Hearst-Pulitzer in-your-face approach to reporting, which referred to an emphasis on sex, violence and crime "sprinkled with
emotionalism, inaccuracies, and exaggerations" (Andrews, 1996, p. PG). According to Geimann (1997), the journalism industry is finally demanding better "and just in the nick of time" (p. 41).
