medium and they basically gave it one year -- 1947, the first peacetime year for television, to prove itself. Critics of television as an advertising vehicle argued that there were too few television sets in homes, that production of the sets and the broadcasting equipment was retarded due to problems in factories, and that the FCC had not yet ruled on color video. They likened the situation to movies which did not really become a major entertainment force until someone was willing to move beyond the $10,000 per picture budget to $1 million per picture. Grey Advertising, Inc. wrote these comments as a rebuttal to the critics of television as a viable advertising medium in 1947. Grey said that television would find its way within five years (Berenson, 1997). He was certainly correct in his predictions: in 1950, advertisers began an exodus from radio commercial to television commercials. An article in Variety described it as "the greatest exhibition of mass hysteria in showbiz annals" (Advertising Age, 1995). Grey was absolutely correct and one must wonder how those critics must feel today, if any of them are still alive. Television is a major advertising medium and has been for decades and as all things change so have the commercials aired on TV. To see just how much advertising has changed, tune in to TV Land, a cable channel supported by Nickelodeon. They not only air some of the shows from the early days, they also air some of the commercials in their "retro commercial" segments. It is recommended that the student consider watching this channel and then report some of the commercials viewed.
