While many argue that television does not make children violent, others argue that the more violence a child is exposed to the more they will learn such behavior believing it to be the correct behavior. The following paper summarizes and examines 4 different articles dealing with television and violence and the affects on children. Television Articles The first article comes from the American Psychological Association and is titled Violence on Television. In this article the author(s) illustrate that while broadcasters (those who make money off of television programming) argue that violence in childrens television, and in television in general, does not create violent children there are numerous studies that have been conducted, for decades, which indicate just the opposite. The article indicates how children are less bothered by violence in the real world, are more apt to act aggressively because of violence in television and essentially indicates that violence on television does do a great deal of damage to children. The article also proposes ways in which parents can discuss and control what their children watch. The next article is by Tim Goodman and is titled Hate Violence? Turn It Off. His article indicates that if parents, and other adults in control of televisions, do not like the things they see on the television they should simply turn the television off. The author indicates that some people enjoy a sort of gritty and dangerous reality in television which many argue is bad for children. The author also notes that the parents are ultimately in charge of what is being watched and they cannot, nor should they, blame television programming for their childrens television watching behavior, especially if they give a child a television in their room and never monitor what they watch. ...
