operational efficiency of many companies. In some instances the increased efficiency has been necessary, whereas in others the increased benefits have been the source of a competitive advantage. There are probably only a few industries where the supply chain has not seen some type of impact from technology. One of the industries that has been most influenced is the retail industry. However, this also has many subsections, as it is an extremely large industry. If we consider the sector of the supermarkets and large discount retailers then we will see that the advance of technology has increased their ability to be responsive to customer needs as well as reducing some of the costs. Within this industry there are two major players within the United Sates, Wal-Mart and K-Mart. In countries such as the UK Wal-Mart still has a presence in the form of the purchase of the Asda group, but companies such Tesco and Sainsburys are also strong competitors. If we look at the strongest of these companies we can consider the change. Wal-Mart is known today as one of the largest discount retailers both inside and outside the United States, but like any company the way it has grown to the current size and position is one that can be seen as a combination of purposeful strategy and emergent strategy, taking opportunities of circumstances as they emerge. Wal-Mart started in 1962 when the first store was opened by Sam Walton, the man who was to be the driving force behind the success and culture of the company, a company that has now grown the over 3,000 stores in the United States and over 1,000 internationally (Wal-mart.com, 2001).
