There have been a handful of technological mistakes and follies during the 20th century, particularly as it drew to a close. There were nuclear disasters, like what occurred
at Three Mile Island as well as fears of future mistakes concerning nuclear reactors in Russia, for example. There have been several oil spills and problems with toxic waste and
chemicals. There was Love Canal, a place in the United States that was tainted by chemicals and much attention has been brought to the forefront with films and other media
that served to bring these topics to light. While disasters are numerous, there were two that have taken the spotlight and appear to be more significant than many others;
these are the Bhopal disaster and the Exxon Valdez mess. In 1989, the Exxon Valdez carried 53 million gallons of crude oil and accidentally ran aground (Bradley PG). It
was at the time, thought to be the worst environmental disaster in United States history (PG). It did kill more wildlife than any other previous disaster (PG). On top
of that, about 60,000 Alaskans have reported that the oil spill hurt their lives as well as their livelihoods (PG). The disaster cost Exxon $3.5 billion and some of
that went towards a massive cleanup effort (PG). It is something that hurt the environment immeasurably and continues to affect the area.
Due to the spills location and size, the Exxon Valdez incident quickly led to new legislation in the form of the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (Birkland 4). The
legislation was implemented just eighteen months after the Exxon Valdez fiasco which ended a close to 14-year-long deadlock over how to improve federal oil pollution laws (4). In some way,
