Cohesive teams are developed over a period of time and through very specific steps. This essay describes the characteristics of newly formed teams, explains the stages of group development, the importance of group roles, and intra-group conflict management. Cohesive teams are developed over a period of time and through very specific steps. The first thing to recognize is that there are specific stages in the group development process. As groups progress through these stages, they become an effective team. Next is the need for group roles that distribute leadership and responsibilities among the members of the group. Conflict will erupt in any group and it is essential to provide training to the members of the team in how to manage the natural conflict that will definitely emerge. Training is the key element in developing an effective and successful team. The areas of training include effective communication skills, group roles, decision making and conflict management. Gerlach asserted: "The changing landscape of public education has had a significant impact on the roles of the personnel who serve in our schools" (2002). Gerlach went on to explain that due to the changing environment, "[t]o be successful, teachers and paraeducators must view themselves as teams and partners in the educational process (2002). A document from the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory also supported the value of teams and the necessity for them: "Making schools successful takes more than just individual effort - it takes teamwork. Schools are using teams to accomplish many tasks. Teams may work on site-based decision-making, curricular reform, implementing new programs, or restructuring" (NCREL, 1995).
