The essay ends with a lesson plan for a struggling youth and one for a struggling adult. Obstacles to Learning Adults are more rigid in their behavioral patterns than are children. Over their own lifetimes, they have found what works for them in learning and what does not work. This can result in a reluctance to try new methods of learning. Children are more open-minded in terms of trying new things and the young child is especially eager to learn (Explore Adult Learning, 2012). The adult brain is more mature, which will enable them to apply their learning to other situations. They can relate the task of learning to read to other experiences. Children learn mostly through practice, repetition, drills, rote memorization, and questions and answers. These techniques do not work as well with adults who become bored. Adults have an advantage in that they know what the purpose of learning how to read is. Children do not necessarily equate a pleasant purpose. There are many obstacles in teaching children to read. The literature suggests that poverty is one of the greatest obstacles to overcome. They have not been exposed to reading at home and they do not have the developmental resources at home. There are other obstacles such as visual and hearing impairments, attention deficits, cognitive deficiencies, and physical limitations (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 2012).
