Bethlehem church, peace will never come to the region. The rift between Israelis and Palestinians over a homeland state is not new, however - it goes back thousands of years.
Israel has changed hands so many times, its difficult to know who has had jurisdiction over it and at what time. Blood was spilled when Israel achieved statehood in 1948,
and it seems as though there has been no way to call peace between the Palestinian Authority and Israel since that time. It also seems destined that Israelis and Palestinians
will continue hurting and killing one another until there are no more Palestinians and Israelis remaining. The quest for peace and the
lack of success in obtaining it hasnt been for lack of trying, however. In modern times, during the 1970s, President Jimmy Carter attempted to broker peace settlements between then Egyptian
president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin. More recently, during the year 2000, President Bill Clinton attempted to get then Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak together with Palestinian
Authority leader Yassir Arafat to broker a peace deal in the Mid-East. The two parties came close to finalizing a deal, and then talks were broken off and no deal
was set. Until recently, President George W. Bush has had a "hands-off" attitude toward violence in the Middle East, claiming that Palestinian and Israelis need to work things out.
Could peace have been brokered? Did the United States help or hinder the attempt? Can there ever be peace between these two peoples?
