next day changed things. Americans learned they were no longer safe on their own soil. They learned that people were out there to destroy them. And -- they learned that these people hated America with a blind rage, inexplicable, in many cases. That hatred, that rage, the will for death came courtesy of the Taliban, which had its power base in Afghanistan. It became the goal of the U.S. and its coalition of allies to topple this extremist group and put a pro-democracy government in place. While the effort has been minimally successful (well see that the Taliban is undergoing a resurgence later on), the question still remains. Who are these people? Why do they hate Western culture and mores so blindly? How does al-Qaeda fit in with the Taliban? And even more importantly, can the Taliban come back? Or were they very much taken out of power back in 2002, when the U.S. and coalition forces fought in Afghanistan? Though writing about the Taliban and al-Qaeda could fill many books (and many books have been written about them), well try to understand what the Taliban is, how it ascended to power in Afghanistan, and why it has such a blind hatred toward America -- and all things Western. Though we cant really come up with a solution as to what needs to be done about these groups, perhaps a better understanding would allow the development of a concrete plan.
