perceptions and misperceptions, it can be said, continue to earn the phrase battle of the sexes when it comes to living, loving, and succeeding. The depiction of women and men, and their societal roles, has been explored and portrayed in a number of ways over the years in television, film, magazines, and books. In television, in particular, one can see the vast differences between the perception of the gender roles in the American society and the reality of the situation. The Cosby Show, which debuted in 1984, portrayed the modern American family in one light, while, in comparison/contrast, a vastly different show, Married with Children would emerge upon the scene in 1987 to counter the portrayals of gender shown in The Cosby Show. The Cosby Show, which first aired in September of 1984, brought a shining example of the American Dream, achieved at last. Cliff and Claire Huxtable have the perfect life. Hes a doctor and shes a lawyer and together they have five children. Somehow they manage to make the living look easy even as they deal with the antics and family mischief of a growing family. Each episode, it can be said, dealt with some issue, whether it was peer pressure, or dishonesty and how the perfect parents dealt with it. But were the gender roles closer to the mark than other shows at the time? Perhaps. Clair Huxtable exampled the African American woman who had it all: career, family and money. The show was better able to transcend the racial stereotype as well as many of the gender stereotypes. Claire was seen as an integral part of the overall family, not subordinate to Cliff, but a co-partner in raising the children and maintaining/contributing to the familys income.
