of the huge giant computers that sat in the basements of most corporations and that talked to other like computers at other corporations. And although the Internet existed during the 1970s, it was primitive by todays standards. Used only by academicians and the military, access to the Internet was available to only a restricted and very select and trusted few people who would not necessarily take the information they gained and use it to destroy anything or anybody. The Internet was for informational purposes only - network grids that controlled everything from power grids to confidential information simply were not in place. Then came the desktop computer revolution and by the early 1990s, more and more people were beginning to turn to the computer as a way to communicate with others and to store information - some of it sensitive. A side aspect of this was that more people could access the Internet and even access their own companys Local Area Networks from remote locations. As a result, as access to the Internet expanded, no one thought about problems, including security issues, that might be launched as more and more people "logged on" to purchase items or to do business with the home office or to transfer sensitive documents to the boss. It was found that others would enter the home offices portals - hackers who were, at the very least, out to make mischief or who, at the very worst, could gain access to or destroy a companys sensitive information and entire infrastructure.
