One of the most popular of those breeds is the dachshund. HISTORY The dachshund originated in Germany, most experts agree. It was originally bred to go into fox or badgers. The actual word dachs and shund literally means badger dog. If one knows anything about badgers then one understands that they are ferocious animals. The dachshund had to be equal to the task. Dachshunds are fearless, even today, and will often take on perceived foes twice their size. Dachshunds hunt above and below the ground, being bred to both hunt, retrieve and kill its prey. The dachshund appears funny to those who are not familiar with its original purpose. But, if one does understand its original purpose, then one understands that the short legs were bred for digging into burrows of their prey, the long tail provided the hunter with a means of locating the dog when he was in the ground(The Dachshund History). The skin on a dachshund is loose so that it will not snag and hurt the dog as he burrows through the brush and deep Earth. Varieties Dachshunds come in three varieties: long-haired, short-haired, and wire-haired. There are some differences in temperament between the short haired and long haired dachshunds as well as grooming needs.
