Such an investigation is helpful, however, if only to determine how different institutions operate and how effective those operations are. Although these two institutions were structured for somewhat the same reasons, they do differ from one another in a variety of ways. They were started for different reasons. They have a different form of structure and policies. And at times, they do pursue differing goals. But the EU and ASEAN share things in common, too. The one thing that transcends everything is that these two institutions are dedicated to strength through unity. European Union and History The European Union (EU) is considered ". . . a new stage in the construction of a United Europe. The European Union (EU) traces its roots back to the late 1940s, when a war-weary continent sought to prevent horrific conflicts such as World War II (Letiche, 2002). The official basis for European integration occurred in 1952, when the European Coal and Steel Community was created to help speed reconstruction of Europe while working to prevent future battles among the signatories which were France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy and Belgium (Anonymous, 2002). In fact, the original economic integration of Western Europe was to prevent France and Germany, long-time rivals, from going to war again (Letiche, 2002).
