Hoovers "inability" to handle the economy (not to mention his eastern intellectualism), cost him the election in 1932 to Franklin Roosevelt (and ironically enough, he had to be in office for two terms before the economy turned around because of World War II). But blaming or praising a president for the economy continues to this day. President Ronald Reagan, for example, is considered the author of the expanding economy during the 1980s, as is Bill Clinton for the huge economic expansion in the 1990s. On the other hand, George Bush Sr. was kicked out of office because of a sluggish economy. His son, George Bush Jr., is not fairing very well either, as much of his term has been overshadowed not only by the war on terror, but also by a recession that most economists have been talking about for years. While presidents are not directly responsible for the success or failure of their economies, they are responsible for introducing initiatives and acts to Congress that can control things such a taxes. They are also involved in appointments to economic posts, such as Secretary of the Treasury and Federal Reserve Chairman. In this paper, well examine the economy under the tenure of three presidents: George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton and George Bush Jr. Some of the information well examine includes the stock market, interest rates, median income and unemployment figures.
