However, for all its glitter, computer technology is not pure gold. Is there a downside to computer-aided education? Potentially, as with anything, there is the possibility of abuses and/or shortsightedness on the part of programmers as well as those designing curriculum(Alliance for Childhood, 2000). However, it is important, one must say, to realize that most school systems assume that a majority of the student body will have access to a home computer. However, this does bring to light some of the inherent problems with computer-enhanced learning. One of the potential problems that experts are talking about is the addiction to the Internet and the heavy reliance upon the Internet to supply more than just educational needs. In other words, many students are wasting their lives away behind a computer, does education want to add to the time that students are already spending online? The Alliance for Childhood decided to study the effects of computers on children and what they discovered was that programs which are passive in nature, which equate to simple mouse clicks and button pushing did little to enhance the learning process, and in fact may stifle creativity and imagination (Healy 1998). What many experts warn is that while the highly interactive multimedia could be the exciting magic educational ride that it promises to be, it can also be simply an addictive activity which yields little to no educative value(Kaiser Family Foundation 1999, see also Postman 1995, and Oppenheimer 1997).
