can be a source of therapy and consolation. James McBride in his book, The Color of Water, writes a book about his mother in an effort to understand himself and
his own internal landscape. The result is a poignant, you-can-come-home again type of book, which is at once inspiring, infuriating, and rich with the colors of the human condition.
If this were but another story about a childs search for the story of his parents life, then it would, perhaps, have remained on the shelves, forgotten. However, this novel
is the story of Ruth McBride, a woman who came to a crossroads in her life and had the courage to recognize her destiny when it was staring her in
the face. Her courage is her sons courage. Her story is our story; Americas story. From the beginning all James knows of his mother is what the others know, that
she is a determined woman with dark eyes that are full of energy and passion. And yet, there is something else buried in the deep recesses of her eyes. It
is this something, this secret pain that James longs to discover. To the all black family of the McBrides, Ruths light skin was a source of embarrassment for James,
he confesses. What the reader comes to learn is that Ruth McBride was born Ruth Shilsky and that she and her family immigrated from Poland to the United States. Estranged
from her family for all these years because she has married a black man, Ruths secret pain is finally exposed for the reader, and James, to deal with. This
