take on the other job. But then came the 1980s, with its downsizing, re-engineering and the same amount of work needing
to be done by fewer people. At this point, it wasnt a question of whether employees should be trained to do others work - they almost had to learn, in
order to ensure the company would survive. That period gave way to the formation of teams. Instead of departments handling one aspect
of a particular job, some companies shifted into teams, that took on whole chunks of tasks. The team mentality in a
corporation is still evolving. But when used correctly, it can help the organization achieve its goals, while allowing humans to work together on behalf of the organization. The Flat Organization
and Empowerment Once upon a time, organizations had mainly vertical structures - orders came from the top boss to employees, and if
anything needed to be approved of or acknowledged, that information flowed back through the many levels of corporate bureaucracy to the top. This method worked fairly well until global competition
started stepping in. When that happened, taking time to wait until decisions came from the top left a company hopelessly behind the rest of the industry. Companies such as Pan
American Airlines found this out the hard way - by clinging to its old structure, the one that had served them so well at one time, rather than being flexible
