In order to look at some of the ways in which
systemic thinking could be applied by social workers in relation to their work with children and families, it would be useful for the student to consider how systemic thinking operates
and what applications it might have in terms of family therapy.
Systemic thinking operates differently from analytical thinking in that it breaks a situation down into its component patterns and applies a number
of different disciplines in order to comprehend the pattern within the situation. It is a general framework which allows different techniques to be employed, rather than inflicting the strict constraints
of a closed system on the problem. In terms of human relationships, it works on the principle that people are autonomous human beings and it is not possible to understand
them or modify their behaviour without interacting with them and using communication in various forms to gain knowledge.
Because of this interaction between the parties, systemic thinking is not objective, and therefore it does
not objectify the person or situation. In other words, rather than the observer distancing themselves from the subject and trying to establish empirical, analytical knowledge about the subject, it is
